So I was trying to watch a video on putlocker (probably not terribly legal, but I own the movie on dvd and was too lazy to go get it and put it in my computer, and then this came up

I don't know if it will be big enough, but at the bottom it says

security-scan-7055.in is an official site of the US government, U.S. Department of Justice.

I believe that the US government has all of their websites with a .gov top level domain, it would be even different if it was a .com or .net, not one from india, I don't think the US government registers its sites in India, needless to say, I didn't pay them $300 in a MoneyPak.

Reminds me of the FBI virus a few years back. Like this, but instead of just the browser it'd prevent your entire OS from booting till you paid a fee. Somehow my grandfather picked it up about a month ago. I keep telling him to get his porn from a legit virus free site but noooooo

Yeah, it's a scam. My friend had a virus that shut down his whole computer and asked for $500, he wiped it and it was gone.

I think the FBI itself actually had to put out a statement regarding these scams, something about them not ever engaging in what's tantamount to an online bribe. That being said, I see 20 different hoaxes shared on Facebook everyday so I'm sure the brainiac behind this scheme actually makes a pretty decent penny.

I have adblock, but on putlocker.is, it wouldn't let me watch the movie without disableing it, and chromes popup blockers seems pretty crappy.

If "go to 7 Eleven for a prepaid debit card to pay your fine" wasn't enough of a hint, the third world call center phrasing should've sealed the deal: "if the fine will not be paid"., "all PC data will be detained", "available at the stores nationwide", etc.

I had the exact same thing happen on my Mac. All I had to do was reset the browser and remove all cookies and browsing data and I was fine.

I know the ways of this virus by now, so it doesn't really bother me the way it used to. I can now pretty much get rid of it completely in about 20 or so minutes without reinstalling anything.

There are much worse viruses out there compared to this though. Whenever I see this, I tell customers they can easily change credit card numbers if it came to that (some have paid, foolishly). There are viruses that have corrupted documents so badly that somewhat recently, one job was almost a write-off in terms of data. My boss literally couldn't recover a single document to a readable state. I never really had a chance to dig into it and try and recover things.

After typing that Indian FBI Officials burst in through the door to detain Jordaneer. Now he will never see the light of day again because he defiantly refused to pay some Indian twerp the federal government. Naturally he resisted, throwing his mouse at an 'agent' shouting, "YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE, BITCHES!" He dived out the window and fell...three feet. He sprinted off into the dead of the night. Heh, I actually had this happen to me, but it was a version that locked my entire computer as soon as it started up, like I couldn't even sign into my user profile. I had to create a new profile in the boot menu and download a second anti-virus system from that profile because freaking McAfee's crappy free college version didn't fix it the first time. Needless to say I now double-check to see if my torrents are .exe files and don't get the newest episodes of Top Gear from a Ukrainian website because FinalGear's torrents had too many leeches.

I thought final gear shut down... I don't know, if you use an adblocker, this is a pretty good site for top gear, http://www.free-tv-video-online.me it's only like 360p though, just make sure to have an adblocker and don't use Internet explorer, I recommend using firedrive, sockshare or gorrillavid as the host. I use it all the time, and have for like a year and a half. plus you don't have to download anything, tubeplus.me is okay but not quite as good. Anyway, this is just a suggestion so you don't have to download files from the sketchy side of the internet.

Thanks for the advice! It was a few years ago so FinalGear was still going strong, back when I didn't know crap about torrenting; now I use KickAss Torrents almost exclusively because they have verified uploaders and files and I haven't had any problems since. It was just me being an impatient, lazy idiot haha.
